DETOUR: HEARST CASTLE

Recently, while on the road we took a detour to check out Hearst Castle in San Simeon. I have always been semi curious about it even though we usually just drive right by, but sometimes it's good to change it up. So we did.
The story of William Randolph Hearst and the immense scale and commitment to create his massive estate is mind blowing. It was a project that spanned 28 years - that's including building a zoo (that is why you can sometimes see zebras from HWY 1), building an art collection and crazy scale landscaping. I love the fact that the architect and landscape designer was a woman, Julia Morgan. Note, the entire property is 250,000 acres.
Although I love geeking out on the history, the castle and its' contents were too formidable for my taste. I found myself much more enchanted with decorative architectural elements and the sprawling gardens. Oh, and of course the view! It is easy to understand why he wanted to build way up above the Central California coast, it is a whole world unto itself.
Sharing a few photos here in case you might be considering a detour of your own, more formal photos can be found the Hearst Castle site.
